Pruning Season

Just as the plants are about to take off in a growth of true abundance; I am reflecting even more so on pruning. Yes, pruning. Clipping. Cropping. Dead Head. Snip. It all means the same thing: TO TRIM.

You’ve heard of TRIM the FAT, but have you ever thought about it in relation to human development? Quite literally, it means to cut the extra fat off your delicious steak, get rid of the excess and the unnecessary, but quite figuratively, it means to detoxify.

Detoxification is the act of releasing toxins, prior to replenishing your body’s cells with new energy, new nutrients, and new life. I recently listened to episode S3E8 of the Fit and Fabulous Podcast (link available in the footnotes of this post), where Dr. Seeman interviews Dr. Nickelston in reference to their experience (personally and professionally) with the lymphatic and vascular systems of the human body. He used the analogy of a “clogged toilet” quite frequently; painting a picture of the difficulty you’d have in trying to flush it over and over and over again, before you clear the drain completely. It would have absolutely no where to go, and you’d most definitely cause an even greater problem that just letting it sit idle in the confides of your city’s sewer.) While I am not trained in lymphatic drainage or massage therapy (or plumbing for that matter 🙂 I have always been intrigued by the integration of the entire human body, and it’s ability to heal itself when conditions are adequate. After listening to this podcast, I am inspired to add this into the guidelines of my private practice. A pruning period may be the missing tool that we need in repairing, revitalizing, and rejuvenating cells and allowing for optimal function for all developmental functions.

This pruning period should first take form on a physical level; where we analyze our schedules, our diets, or hobbies, and our relationships. This pruning period should then take form on a psychological level; where we analyze our successes and our struggles, and most importantly, our connection to our own minds. Once we sit in that freshly pruned meadow for a few weeks, it is time for growth.

We’ll plant a seed of dedication, and take action toward TRIMMING one element of fat from our lives that opens up TIME and commitment to this therapeutic journey. Just like any other visit to the doctor, it takes a certain amount of follow-through from parents, caregivers and clients alike. I will not be calling in prescriptions to be retrieved from a pharmacy, but I may be writing prescriptions for walks in nature, play with your children, or building new friendships in areas you find fascinating.

In summation, this is just one added element to the whole-body practice and therapy within Ms. Margaret’s Therapy. I believe that communication is so much more than talking, and our lives are amplified through quality conversation and connection to other humans.
